Europe is full of cute towns, right? Every time I travel through Europe I am blown away by the beautiful towns. The market square, the little lane ways, the beautiful buildings and the atmosphere. However, I don’t think I have ever been as amazed by a place as I have Cesky Krumlov.
Cesky Krumlov is a small town of roughly 13,000 people in the South Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. The tiny town is swarmed by tourists in the Summer and is a relative “ghost town” in the winter. Although it is not easily accessible by train, it is not hard to see why it is so popular with tourists.

The Christmas Markets
In many European Cities the Christmas markets take over the entire town square and make it very difficult to see the buildings. The market in Cesky Krumlov’s main square is pretty small which allows you to see the gorgeous buildings.
Where to eat
There are many places to eat in Cesky Krumlov but our favourite was the Travellers Restaurant. The restaurant is part of a hostel that was built in an old barn. It is a one of a kind restaurant and it has the most amazing food and drinks for a very good price.
The only mistake we made with this place was, not going back the next night.
Things to see in Cesky Krumlov
The castle – Cesky Krumlov has a beautiful castle with great views! It is free to enter the castle and to see these views. However, the downside for us was the bears. Cesky Krumlov has had bears in the castle of many centuries and they remain there today. However, we felt very uncomfortable with the enclosure the bears are in.
Wandering the town – We spent two nights in Cesky Krumlov and we spent a majority of our time just wandering around the streets and the Christmas markets. There are so many different streets and areas of Cesky Krumlov to keep you entertained and amazed for two whole days.
How to get to Cesky Krumlov
From Prague to Cesky Krumlov
Travelling from Prague there are a few options to get to Cesky Krumlov
It takes around 2.5 hours (175 km) to drive from Prague to Cesky Krumlov. Once you reach Cesky Krumlov, there is plenty of parking in the city center.
Trains connect Prague throughout the day. Most journeys require a transfer in Ceske Budejovice.
Keep in mind if you pre book your trains and you have booked both of the direct trains (to and from Prague) you will only have three hours in Cesky Krumlov.
The trains with transfers only take about 10 to 30 minutes longer than the direct train. To get back to Prague, you can take the 4:57 pm train it connects through Ceske Budejovice, arriving in Prague at 7:57 pm. It’s a longer day but it would give you plenty of time in Cesky Krumlov.
For a timetable and train tickets, visit the official website here.
The train station is a 30 minute walk from the town center. There are also local buses available.
Flexi Bus runs regularly per day between Prague and Cesky Krumlov. The cost is from 4.99€ one way for economy class.
The trains did not suit us on the way back to Prague so we took the bus. I would not recommend this. Our bus driver, stopped several times without notice and was a very erratic driver.
I would much rather have taken the train back, but if this is your only option it is a cheaper way.
Luggage Storage: If you are visiting Cesky Krumlov while traveling between two cities you will need to store your luggage. The Cesky Krumlov Tourist Information Center is the only place that will store your luggage for 2€ or 50CZK. You can also store your bike if necessary.
The Tourist Information Center is located in town whereas the train station is located outside of town. From the train station, you can walk or take the local bus to get from the train station to the TI office. Get updated hours and learn more on the Tourist Information Center website.
