Imagine strolling through the enchanting streets of Vienna during the most beautiful time of the year.
The city, draped in a festive cloak, transforms into a wonderland that looks straight out of a Christmas storybook.
I have experienced the magic of Vienna at Christmas firsthand; I can assure you that the city holds a unique charm during the holiday season.
Picture yourself aboard the iconic yellow tram, winding your way through the historic ring of the city, each turn revealing a new, festive delight.
The Prater Ferris wheel, offering breathtaking views of the wintry skyline, beckons you for a ride.
Visiting the vibrantly eccentric Hundertwasser House adds colour to the stark winter palette.
And as night falls, Vienna truly comes alive. The Christmas markets, with their twinkling lights and the aroma of hot mulled wine, offer a cozy refuge in the chilly evening.
Walking through these markets and sipping warm drinks, you’re enveloped in an unmatched festive atmosphere.
Here is your perfect itinerary for spending 3 days in Vienna at Christmas.
Day 1 in Vienna – City Center and Iconic Attractions
I’ve crafted an itinerary for your first day in Vienna, focusing on exploring the historic centre, indulging in cultural exploration, and experiencing the enchanting Christmas markets.

Morning – Exploring the Historic Center
Your journey through Vienna’s Christmas charm begins with a ride on the yellow tram, circling the historic Ringstrasse.
When we visited Vienna, it was freezing, and we wanted to find a place to escape the cold—yes, there were heaters at each seat!
This iconic tram route offers an exceptional vantage point to admire Vienna’s grandeur, with its palatial buildings and manicured parks donning festive decor.
Gliding past these architectural marvels, you’ll feel like you’re traversing through a living museum, each building telling its tale of Vienna’s illustrious past.
Next, explore the city’s heart: St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
This towering Gothic masterpiece is a testament to Vienna’s rich history and artistic prowess. Its intricate detailing and imposing structure will leave you amazed.
Take your time to wander around and soak in the atmosphere, perhaps climbing the South Tower for a panoramic view of the city, enveloped in its Christmas attire.
The morning’s exploration doesn’t end here.
Vienna’s historic centre is a treasure trove of sights. Wander through the cobblestone streets and stumble upon numerous iconic structures.
Each corner of this area has a story to unfold, with hidden courtyards, quaint cafes, and shops that have stood the test of time.

Afternoon – Cultural Exploration
As the afternoon sets in, make your way to the Hundertwasser House. This architectural wonder, designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, breaks all conventions with its vibrant colours, organic forms, and lush greenery.
The first time I visited Vienna, I got lost when wandering around the city and stumbled across Hundertwasser House, and I am so glad I did. It was such a contrast to the pristine city centre of Vienna, where I bought one of my favourite scarves!
The building is not just a residence but a livable art, symbolising Hundertwasser’s vision of a harmonious coexistence between nature and humans.
Nearby, Vienna’s cultural landscape awaits your exploration. The city’s museums, a testament to its status as a cultural epicentre, offer something for every interest.
Whether it’s the classic art collections in the Belvedere or the contemporary pieces in the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna’s museums will surely enrich your understanding of the city’s artistic heritage.
Take this opportunity to explore Vienna’s cultural scene more, perhaps stopping at a local gallery or attending a short concert.
Evening – Viennese Cuisine and Christmas Markets

As evening falls, immerse yourself in traditional Austrian flavours at Zwölf Apostelkeller. This authentic Viennese restaurant, nestled in a historic cellar, offers a culinary journey through Austria’s gastronomic heritage.
You will feel like you are stepping back in time as you descend the stairs into the beautiful restaurant. As we travelled for four months, we felt like we were treating ourselves by sitting at an authentic restaurant rather than eating food on the street.
Savour classic dishes like Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz in an ambience that echoes the charm of old Vienna.
The highlight of your evening is a visit to the magical Christmas markets. These festive markets, illuminated by thousands of twinkling lights, create a fairytale atmosphere in the heart of Vienna.
Stroll through rows of stalls adorned with handcrafted goods, seasonal treats, and warm drinks.
The aroma of roasted chestnuts, gingerbread, and the ever-popular Glühwein fills the air, adding to the festive spirit.
Each market has its unique charm, with the one at Rathausplatz being particularly enchanting.
Wrap up your day by wandering through these markets, perhaps picking up souvenirs or enjoying the jovial atmosphere.
The blend of the old-world charm, the joyous melodies of Christmas carols, and the cheerful crowds make for a perfect end to your first day in Vienna.
✔ Fiona’s Tip: Each market has its mug in which it serves its Glühwein. You pay a deposit for the mug, and you can return it at the end of the night and get your deposit back, or you can lose your deposit and keep the mug. I found these to be great keepsakes, so I highly recommend visiting all the markets and deciding which mug you like best before keeping your mug!

Day 2 in Vienna – Palaces and Parks
Enjoy a day filled with royal explorations and festive experiences, from the grandeur of Vienna’s palaces to the enchanting Christmas markets
Morning – Royal Beginnings
Our second day in Vienna invites you to enter the world of royalty. Begin your morning at the majestic Schönbrunn Palace.
This former imperial summer residence is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, and its history is as captivating as its beauty.
Wander through its lavishly decorated rooms, each telling a story of the Habsburg dynasty. Don’t miss the Mirror Room, where Mozart performed at the tender age of six.
After exploring the palace, take a leisurely walk in its vast gardens. The perfectly manicured lawns, elaborate fountains, and the Gloriette, a grand structure atop a hill, offer breathtaking views of the palace and its surroundings.
This serene oasis is a perfect spot for a morning stroll, allowing you to appreciate the palace’s grandeur from different perspectives.

Afternoon – Leisure and Discovery
In the afternoon, venture to Vienna’s beloved park, the Prater. This vast public park is an idyllic retreat with expansive green spaces and old chestnut trees and is also home to a historic amusement park.
In the winter, the park is very quiet in the afternoon, but you want to visit to see the iconic Riesenrad – the second oldest Ferris Wheel in Europe.
I have ridden the Riesenrad twice, and it has been a fantastic experience both times! I can’t recommend this enough.
A ride on this wheel provides spectacular panoramic views of Vienna, a treat for both the eyes and the soul.

Evening – The Essence of Christmas in Vienna
As evening sets in, immerse yourself in the festive spirit at Maria-Theresien-Platz.
This square, nestled between two grand museums, transforms into a vibrant Christmas market during the holiday season.
Here, you can wander among beautifully decorated stalls, each offering unique crafts, delicious treats, and warm drinks.
The atmosphere is enchanting, with the backdrop of the illuminated museums adding to the magic.
Your day ends at the Brunnen vor der Karlskirche, not far from Maria-Theresien-Platz.
This area, known for its beautiful baroque church, hosts a charming Christmas market with a distinctively family-friendly ambiance.
A highlight here is the delightful petting zoo, perfect for visitors of all ages. The combination of the festive market and the stunning architectural setting creates a memorable Christmas experience, epitomizing the beauty and charm of Vienna during the holiday season.
Day 3 in Vienna – Unique Experiences and Local Life

Morning – Off the Beaten Path
Starting your final day in Vienna, head to the city centre to fulfil that lingering wish for a unique Viennese snow globe.
On our European trip, I wanted to buy a beautiful and unique globe I could take home. I found one in Vienna that I loved, but for some reason, I decided against buying it. Four years later, I still wish I had bought that snow globe (even though I did buy a beautiful one in Poland later in the trip!).
Next, discover the surprising contrast of Vienna’s street art scene along the river at Inner Stadt. It’s an unexpected splash of vibrant creativity in a city often characterized by pristine, white architecture.
Hiring scooters, as I did, is a fun way to navigate this area. Whizzing along the riverbanks, you’re treated to an outdoor graffiti and street art gallery, showcasing a different, edgier side of Vienna.
It’s a refreshing change of pace and perspective, highlighting the city’s diverse artistic expressions.

Afternoon – Culinary Delights
An essential Vienna experience is savouring its culinary delights. In a cozy café (I loved Kaffee Alt Wien – but it is cash only), treat yourself to a heavenly slice of apple strudel, complete with creamy vanilla sauce.
A flavour lingers in your memory, epitomizing Viennese sweetness and warmth. This dish isn’t just food; it’s a piece of Viennese culture served on a plate, a must-try for every visitor.
Spend the rest of your afternoon exploring local markets and shops. These hubs of authentic Viennese life offer everything from artisanal crafts to gourmet local products.
Strolling through these markets, you’re immersed in the vibrant local life, with each vendor telling a story through their goods.
Evening – Wrapping Up the Trip
For your final evening, revisit one of the charming Christmas markets or find a tranquil spot in one of Vienna’s elegant parks.
Alternatively, a leisurely dinner at a traditional Viennese restaurant offers a chance to relax and savour the city’s flavours one last time.
As the city lights twinkle against the night sky, Vienna bids you a gentle farewell, leaving you with memories of a trip filled with beauty, culture, and magic 3 days in Vienna in December.
