In capitalist countries, there is huge reliance on private ownerships but in socialist countries there is more public control over production and distribution of resources.

This would see the whole country (or society) see the benefits of the countries profits.

This would mean that all property and resources would be owned by the state and any who lives there.

Advocates for socialism would questions if any private ownership should be allowed as the whole idea behind socialism is to make everything as fair and equal for the countrymen as possible.

In theory, the idea of socialism might seem like an ideal situation, living in a place where no one is worse off than others sounds like how life should be.

However, those who do not support or question socialism believe that living as socialists can harm the growth of a country as there is not enough drive to make advancements and there is less of a financial reward for working hard.

Would this mean that a country may fall behind?

What kind of economy is Denmark?

So now we have a rough idea on what a socialist country is, lets have a look at the type of economy that Denmark supports.

Denmark is often thought of as a socialist country, but this is not really the case.

While Denmark does have high income taxes and a large amount of government spending, they also have strong support for individual property rights.

This makes their economy difficult to classify.

In general, Denmark can be considered a free market, capitalist economy with many socialist ideas present.

When running for presidency in 2015 Bernie Sanders stated that he wanted to model the US economy after countries such as Denmark and made the inference that Denmark was a socialist country.

However, Danish prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmuseen disagreed with this view on Denmark and said “I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.”

Therefore, Denmark is not a socialist country, it is a market economy.

What is the Nordic model?

In the same speech mentioned above, The Prime minster referred to the Nordic model and said it “is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security to its citizens.”

So, what is the Nordic model?

Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden governments use a model referred to as the Nordic Model.

The Nordic model includes elements of socialists, for example many people work in the public sector, but it also includes elements of a free market which sees positive results for the economy and the citizens.

In the Nordic Model, citizens pay very high income taxes but they see many benefits in return such as free healthcare and education, brilliant parental leave and sick leave for business owners.

It has been said that there is the locals have a good relationship with their ruling governments. The relationship leads to issues being solved relatively quickly and with a good result for both “sides”.

It is due to this good relationship that see the Nordic Model work in such a successful way.
