How Danes Celebrate New Year
Although Danes are often seen as reserved but on New Years Eve they sure know how to celebrate like the best of them
Danes will often done a festive hat or bib on new Years Eve – if you would like to find your own festive garb most supermarkets will sell something appropriate for you to wear.
New years Eve begins at 6pm when the televisions are turned on for the Queen’s speech to the Danish people.
Since 1941 it has been tradition for the Monarch to address the Danish people from Amalienborg Palace. However, when the tradition began it was broadcast on the radio rather than the television.
Copenhagen becomes a very noisy place on New Years, firecrackers, poppers, fireworks, bullhorns and off course champagne bottles popping make the city come to life.
The tradition of making a lot of noise comes back from when farmers believed evil spirits would be scared away by the noise.
Back in the day, it was thought that evil spirits came to life over the holidays and this is why
On this specific day, the Danes like to make a lot of noise.
Although Danes (well most!) are no longer scared of evil spirits they still like the tradition of making a lot of noise.
At midnight, Danish people quite literally jump into the New Year. You can jump from anything raise, a table, chair, couch, bench, anything that is raised above the ground.
They do this to avoid stepping into the space between the old year and the New Year.
Celebrate in Tivoli Garden’s winter wonderland
If you’re looking for a truly magical way to ring in the new year, look no further than Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens.
Tivoli Garden’s is one of my favourite places in Europe, if not the whole world.
This stunning amusement park comes to life with festive decorations and activities during the Christmas and New Year season, making it the perfect place to celebrate.
The firework display begins at 11pm and is sight to behold – make sure to grab a glass of champagne or mulled wine to cheers the New Year.
Many of the restaurants and food stalls at Tivoli Gardens have a special menu for New Years Eve.
If you plan on dining at one of the restaurants in Tivoli Gardens you will need to book in advance because it is a very popular thing to do.
At midnight, I recommend heading to Town Hall Square to hear the clock tower bring in the New Year.

The Best places to see the Fireworks on New Years Eve
One of the biggest ways to bring in the New Year in Copenhagen is to watch the fireworks displays, or to let off your own fireworks (with caution of course).
The most common places to see the fireworks in Copenhagen is at the City Hall Square, Dronning Louises Bridge and the Copenhagen Lakes.
There are no regulations for who can set off fireworks in Denmark and fireworks are easily bought at the supermarket.
So, when heading out to look for fireworks prepare yourself for mayhem and chaos.
Fireworks will be going off in every direction and by a myriad of people you will have no idea who set off which fireworks.
Despite being chaotic (and at times a little scary if you are not used to it), it is also a beautiful and one in a life time sort of experience.
If you would like to head where the locals go, Fælledparken. It is a dark park (although very safe) where you can see the bright lights of the fireworks lights up the dark night sky.
It is a very cool experience.
If you would prefer to see some fireworks by the water head to Refshaleøen or Christianshavn. The view from Christianshavn is amazing.
Not so sure about being so close to all of the action? Head to the inner harbour bridge where you can watch the fireworks from a safe distance.
For a more organised experience, Tivoli gardens has a beautiful display of fireworks beginning at 11pm.
